250 Years and Still No Playbook: What Founders Teach Entrepreneurs
Oct 17, 2026
America turned 250 years old this year, and it started with no playbook: no case study, no one ahead of them dropping breadcrumbs. Just a conviction that the way things were was not the way things had to stay. Every entrepreneur has lived some version of that moment.
What does America's 250th birthday have to do with your business?
That's wild if you actually sit with it for a second. 250 years ago, a group of people decided to do something that had literally never been done before. No playbook. No case study. No one ahead of them dropping breadcrumbs.
Just a conviction that the way things were wasn't the way things had to stay.
Sound familiar? Every business owner I know has lived some version of that moment. The moment you decided to build something that didn't exist yet. The moment you looked at your life, your career, your industry, and said "I think there's a better way and I'm going to go find it."
Nobody handed you a map. Nobody guaranteed it would work. You just started.
What does building without a playbook look like in real life?
I think about this a lot. When I built my property management company from my living room as a single mom, there was no playbook for that. When I acquired a competitor, nobody in my circle had done it before. When I left a corporate role to build something entirely new in a category that didn't exist, people looked at me like I was a little bit crazy.
You've probably gotten that look too. The one that says "are you sure about this?" from someone who means well but can't see what you see.
Did the founders have it all figured out?
Here's what I love about the founding story of this country, and I think it applies to every entrepreneur reading this right now. The people who signed that document didn't have it all figured out. They had strong opinions, disagreements, and different visions for what this thing could become. It was messy, uncertain, and the outcome was far from guaranteed.
They did it anyway.
You're doing it anyway too. Whatever stage you're in right now, whether you're in your first year or your twentieth, whether you're running 50 doors or 5000, you are doing something most people never have the guts to try. Building something from nothing. Betting on yourself when nobody else would.
What have you built that you don't give yourself enough credit for?
That's worth celebrating. So here is my question for you: what's the thing you've built that you don't give yourself enough credit for? The decision you made without a playbook that actually worked out?
250 years in and we're still figuring it out. Just like the rest of us. There's something comforting about that.
