Everything Happens For You, Not To You: Lessons From a Hard Chapter
Oct 15, 2026
When something painful happens in your business or your life, it can feel like it is happening to you. Choosing to see it as happening for you does not erase the hurt, but it changes what you build from it.
What does "everything happens for you, not to you" mean?
It is a phrase I come back to constantly, and it has changed how I move through almost everything. It is a hard one to swallow in the middle of something painful: when a client leaves, when a deal falls apart, when someone you trusted lets you down, when your body tells you something you do not want to hear, or when life rearranges your plans without asking permission.
In those moments it feels very much like something is happening to you. You have had those seasons, the ones where nothing made sense and the harder you tried to control the outcome, the worse it got.
Can a setback really build your business?
That is what I have learned, and it took me a long time to get here. The things that felt like they were breaking me were building me. Every setback I thought was derailing my plan was redirecting me toward something better.
- The client who left created space for the right one.
- The deal that fell apart saved me from a mistake I could not see yet.
- The health scare that terrified me became the catalyst for the best decision I have ever made.
How do you shift from "to me" to "for me"?
The shift does not mean you pretend it does not hurt. It does not mean you skip the frustration, the grief or the anger. It means you hold space for all of that and stay curious about what is on the other side.
Ask yourself: what if the worst thing that happened to your business this year turns out to be the best thing that happened to your growth? I have watched this play out in my own life so many times that I cannot ignore the pattern. The hardest chapters always come before the biggest breakthroughs.
What if you are in a hard chapter right now?
Whether it is in your business, your health, your personal life or your relationships, sit with this for a second. You do not have to see the lesson yet. You just have to trust that there is one.
Everything happens for you. Even when it does not feel like it. Especially when it does not feel like it.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean that everything happens for you, not to you?
It means treating setbacks as redirection rather than damage. You still feel the frustration, grief or anger, and you stay curious about what is on the other side.
Does this mean you should ignore the pain?
No. The shift does not mean you pretend it does not hurt. It means you hold space for the hard feelings and stay curious.
How can a business setback turn into growth?
A client who leaves can create space for the right one, and a deal that falls apart can save you from a mistake you could not see yet. The hardest chapters often come before the biggest breakthroughs.
