Nobody Talks About the Figuring-It-Out Season

Building a property management business is rarely a straight line. If you have ever wanted to do something that did not have a playbook, something bigger than a tweak or a new hire, something nobody in your industry was doing yet, you know the feeling: equal parts exciting and terrifying, with no roadmap, no case study, and no one ahead of you dropping breadcrumbs. Just you, your gut, and a conviction that will not shut up.

What is the figuring-it-out season?

It is the season where you know the old thing is not the next thing, yet the next thing has not revealed itself yet. So you try stuff. You follow the path that makes sense on paper, do the thing everyone expects, and say yes to the safe, logical next step, even while something in your gut keeps whispering "this is not it."

Maybe you have been through your own version of it. Maybe you are in it right now.

What does the winding road actually look like?

My road here was anything but a straight line. I sold my property management company and joined PURE the next day as their Director of Acquisitions. I loved it. I left in early 2024 to focus on my family.

Then came my own figuring-it-out season. I took Amy Porterfield's digital course program thinking I would build courses for self-managing landlords. I merged my real estate brokerage with a local Weichert office. I worked with an executive strategic coach for a full year. I soft-launched as a property management operations strategist, because that is what every PM consultant does, right?

None of it was wrong. All of it was necessary. None of it was THE thing.

How does the real answer finally show up?

The thing found me in the fall of 2025. After enough conversations, enough signs, and enough quiet moments where the answer finally got loud enough to hear: stop teaching what everyone else is already teaching. Teach the thing only you can teach.

I listened and pivoted hard, niching down to one lane: helping property management company owners believe they can be acquirers and actually become one. Replacing the mindset that keeps you stuck on the hamster wheel of door-by-door growth with a strategy to grow through acquisition, from someone who has actually done it.

In January 2026 I ran my first in-person intensive, launched my podcast about buying and selling property management companies, and built out an entire offer ladder from scratch. I decided I was not the "Cheesecake Factory menu" of property management consultants. I had found my one thing, and I was going to do it really well. It took me a long, winding, messy road to get there.

Does a messy road mean you are lost?

No. Yours might be messy too, and that does not mean you are lost. It means you are finding it. The things that change your business and your life rarely come with a roadmap. They come with the willingness to keep moving even when you are not sure where you are headed yet.

What have you been sitting on?

Whatever you have been sitting on, the move you have been too nervous to make, the category you might be the first to create, pay attention to it. It is trying to tell you something.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for the path of growing a business to feel messy?

Yes. Many owners go through a season of trying the safe, logical next steps before the real direction reveals itself. A messy road does not mean you are lost; it means you are finding it.

What is the figuring-it-out season in business?

It is the stretch where you know the old thing is not the next thing, but the next thing has not shown itself yet. Owners often use it to test courses, partnerships, coaching, or new positioning before their real lane becomes clear.
