Why the Unglamorous Work Is the Work: No Confetti for the Slog
Oct 16, 2026
Most of running a business is slow, unglamorous work that nobody sees: admin, backend setup and the details that cannot be delegated. That work is not in the way of the exciting things. It is what makes them possible.
What does the unglamorous part of running a business look like?
Here is what a day actually looks like for me. I am at my desk, on coffee number three, with two dogs at my feet and a to-do list that is not glamorous, not inspiring and not going to make a good Instagram story.
I am in the middle of some huge projects that I am genuinely excited about. The vision is clear, the direction is right and the energy is there. The work to get there is a slog: admin, backend setup, and things that cannot be delegated because nobody else has the context.
It is the kind of work that takes hours and produces zero visible results. No confetti. No dopamine hit. Just a screen and the quiet knowledge that this is what makes the exciting things possible.
Why does nobody talk about the slog?
Because it does not look like winning. If you run a property management company, you probably know this feeling in your own version of it: peak season, turnovers stacking up, lease renewals, client calls. It is the work that keeps your business running but does not exactly light your soul on fire.
The real version of running a business is sitting at your desk on a Tuesday afternoon doing the thing that has to get done before the exciting thing can happen.
Is the slog an obstacle or part of the work?
I have to remind myself of this sometimes: the slog is not the obstacle to the exciting work. The slog is the work. It is the foundation-laying, system-building, detail-handling, unsexy middle that nobody celebrates but everything depends on.
What should you do if you are in the middle of it right now?
If you are buried in the backend of your business in your busiest season, doing work that nobody sees and nobody applauds, this is the part that counts. Not the stage. Not the podcast. Not the perfectly curated LinkedIn post about your latest win. This, right here, on a Tuesday at your desk: the work you are doing while nobody is watching.
Keep going.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the unglamorous work in a business matter?
It is the foundation that the exciting work depends on. Admin, backend setup and system-building take hours and show no visible result, but they make the bigger projects possible.
Is the slog an obstacle to growth?
No. The slog is not the obstacle to the exciting work, it is the work itself.
How do you stay motivated when the work feels invisible?
Remind yourself that the foundation-laying and detail-handling nobody celebrates is the part that counts, and keep going.
