Why Property Managers Need Ideas from Outside the Industry

Property managers need ideas from outside the industry because fresh perspectives can challenge familiar assumptions and reveal new ways to solve business problems. When you only hear the same advice, it's easy to mistake repetition for growth.

After more than 22 years in property management, I know how easy it is to stay in the same rooms, hear the same advice and call it growth. I love this industry, but this summer I realized I'd been breathing the same air for two decades.

Earlier this year I joined my first mastermind, entirely outside property management. It meant investing time and money in a room of women building brands, launching products and scaling companies in fields I've never worked in. Not one of them manages rental property.

Why does an outside perspective help property managers?

In July I went to Nashville for a two-day event with that group. People asked questions I hadn't considered and shared frameworks that didn't come from another PM conference. Those conversations challenged assumptions I didn't even know I carried.

When everyone around you works in your industry, familiar strategies and definitions of success can start to feel like the only options. Hearing how a leader in another field approaches a similar problem can help you see a different path for your property management business.

How can you get outside your industry bubble?

You don't need to join a mastermind to try this. Find a local business group outside PM. Listen to a podcast about a different industry. Talk with someone who builds something that has nothing to do with rentals, and ask how they solve the problem you're facing.

Your next useful idea might come from a room where nobody knows what a door count is. In that room, you can be a business owner with a vision, not just a property manager following the usual playbook.

When was the last time you spent time with leaders who have nothing to do with property management?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to join a mastermind to find outside ideas?

No. A local business group, a podcast from another industry or a conversation with someone outside property management can help you get outside your usual circle.

What can leaders in other industries teach property managers?

They can ask unfamiliar questions, share different frameworks and challenge assumptions about how to solve business problems.

Does learning outside property management replace industry learning?

The point is to add a different perspective, not dismiss the industry. I love property management, and I also found useful ideas in conversations outside it.
