You Don’t Have to Shrink as You Age

Earlier this year, I turned 51. I said it out loud, more than once, without flinching. And after building and selling a company, here is what I know: you don’t have to shrink as you age. You don’t have to soften your ambition. You don’t have to preface your thoughts or explain your evolution.

I know a lot of women hesitate to share their age. There is this quiet cultural script that says soften it, joke about it, pretend it is not happening. I don’t feel that way anymore.

Every year I get to live on this Earth is a privilege. Every version of me that made it here carried me to this point: the 28-year-old who didn’t know what she was capable of, the 35-year-old rebuilding, the 42-year-old building something bigger than she had ever seen modeled, the 50-year-old who stopped explaining herself before sharing an opinion.

Here feels different. I am guessing you have felt it too: that shift, that restlessness, that quiet knowing that you are not done evolving.

What If There Are No Rules?

Maybe you are in your 30s. Maybe your 40s. Maybe your 50s. Something in you is asking: if there are no rules, what would I actually choose?

How would I run my business? How would I lead? What would I stop apologizing for? What am I capable of that I have not even tried yet?

The older you get, the more you realize there are no invisible rules. Only the ones you decide to keep.

What Changes in Your 50s?

Most of my 30s and 40s were about proving myself. Building credibility. Earning what I thought was the right to be in the room.

My 50s are different. They are about becoming. About owning. About building a life that feels aligned and entirely my own. About making moves I would have been too afraid to make at 35.

That is the real gift of getting older. You stop trying to be the version that makes everyone comfortable. You start building the life that makes you proud.

Is It Too Late to Make the Move?

You realize you have time. You also realize time is finite. Both things are true at the same time. That clarity is when real moves happen.

If you have been feeling that nudge to evolve, to step into something bigger, to stop waiting for permission, consider this your reminder. There are no rules. Only the ones you decide to keep. The 51-year-old version of me is choosing very carefully which ones stay.

The best time to make the move you have been thinking about was five years ago. The second best time is now.

That is the work we do inside Slayer’s Built to Acquire™: building a business around the life you actually want, at every age and every stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to feel restless about your business in your 40s or 50s?

Yes. That restlessness is often a quiet knowing that you are not done evolving. If you find yourself asking how you would run your business, lead, or choose if there were no rules, that is a sign of growth, not a problem to fix.

How do I stop shrinking my ambition as I get older?

Start by noticing where you soften your goals, preface your thoughts, or apologize for evolving. You do not have to do any of that. Keep only the rules you decide to keep, and let the rest go.

What does getting older change about running a business?

For many owners, the focus shifts from proving to owning: less energy spent earning a place in the room, more spent building a business and a life that feel aligned. You realize you have time and that time is finite, and that clarity is when real moves happen.
